Both fractions and decimals come up in every math class and every math topic you can imagine!
Not only that, both of them have very "real-life" applications making it important to not only understand
how to work with them but also what they represent! In general, fractions, decimals, and fractions
are a way of representing some part of a larger whole.
Mathematically, fractions can also be thought of as division.
For example, 2/3 is the same thing as "2 divided by 3".
We can use this to make the connection between fractions and decimals.
To summarize: While physically, fractions can be thought of as part of a whole, they also can be thought of as representing division. Thinking about them this way allows us to note a few important properties:
A fraction with zero in the denominator is undefined
A fraction with the same numerator and denominator is 1 (unless that number is zero!)
Fractions can also represent numbers that are larger than 1
Let's see how you did! Within each lesson, you will find a short quiz like this which is designed
to see if you are understanding the basics of what we are talking about so far.
You can try to answer each question as many times as you like and go back and review parts that don't make sense.
If you have a lot of trouble with the quiz, go back and try watching the videos again or email your questions to me!
